About Us

The Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Chicago carries out research at the frontiers of theoretical physics, broadly defined. While focusing on the fundamental theory of the Universe and matter, the Institute keeps an open eye on connections between theoretical physics and experimental physics, between theoretical physics and adjacent disciplines.

The LITP Chicago carries out its mission through postdoctoral and graduate student fellowship programs, conferences, workshops, and visitors.

The Leinweber Institute has ties to other institutes at the University of Chicago including the Enrico Fermi Insitute, the James Franck Institute, the Kavli Insitute for Cosmological Physics, and the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and Astrophysics and significant overlap of research with faculty in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics.

The LITP Chicago was established in 2025 with a generous gift from the Leinweber Foundation.
