The Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics (LITP) at the University of Chicago invites applications for Postdoctoral Fellowships to begin in the Fall of 2026. Candidates must apply by November 1, 2025 via the button above to receive full consideration. A small group of outstanding candidates will be interviewed in November and December.
The Leinweber Institute was recently founded to advance the study of theoretical physics in all its breadth. Fellows will become part of an intellectual community that is distinguished by its unusual level of interaction across traditional boundaries. Current research in theoretical physics at Chicago spans particle physics, quantum field theory, condensed matter, gravitation, and string theory, with frequent cross-pollination between these areas and with neighboring fields. Fellows will have the freedom to pursue their own research directions while engaging with a department that fosters collaboration and values the interplay of diverse perspectives and methods.
The appointment will be at the internal University rank of Postdoctoral Scholar, which is open only to those individuals who are less than seven years beyond attainment of the Ph.D. degree. The expected salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000. The position is benefits eligible and may be eligible for a taxable moving allowance. The Leinweber Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Chicago plans to award two to three graduate fellowships to cohort-leading PhD students, which will help them advance more quickly toward the goal of becoming a scientist. Prospective graduate students should apply to the PhD program in the Department of Physics.
The Leinweber Insitute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Chicago plans to offer extended visits for distinguished researchers, both international and domestic, to present seminars to our members and to enhance the quality of impact of scientific exchange around the world. The Leinweber Visiting Professor program will help attract leaders in the field to the University of Chicago and allow for visits of a sufficient duration to have a lasting impact.
